Botulinum toxin therapy is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available. We recommend a consultation to help you decide whether this treatment is right for you and to have the treatment performed safely.
When treating fine lines and wrinkles, the registered clinician injects botulinum toxin into targeted muscles on the face or neck. This temporarily relaxes the targeted muscles, causing fine lines and wrinkles to diminish. The effect lasts about 3 to 4 months — and sometimes longer.
When treating excessive sweating, a clinician injects directly into the skin on the underarm. A single treatment can provide up to 6 months of relief from excessive sweating.
Selfie Assured Aesthetics want their patients to look natural. To do this, they inject just enough to weaken and relax the targeted muscles without affecting other muscles. This allows patients to maintain their natural facial expressions.
No. This treatment does not affect your ability to feel.
You can have another treatment when the excessive sweating or lines and wrinkles return. With repeat treatment for lines and wrinkles, the muscle may thin, leading to longer-lasting results.
Most people return to the everyday activities immediately. You will not see a change immediately. It takes 2-4 days to start working and the full effect will not be visible until 2 weeks later.
Immediately afterwards you can expect a small red swelling at the injection site which will reduce within 30 minutes.
Afterwards, there may occasionally be a small bruise or redness which disappears within a few days.
Avoid alcohol and exercise for at least 24 hours afterwards as it can lead to flushing of the skin – this can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Avoid rubbing the areas of the face that have been injected for 24 hours; this includes having facials or facial massage.
Avoid applying make-up directly to the injection sites for 24 hours; you may apply makeup to the other areas of your face.
If a patient develops side effects, these tend to be mild and temporary. The injections, rather than the botulinum toxin itself, cause most mild side effects. For example, a patient may occasionally bruise. If this happens, the bruising lasts about 1 week.
After receiving injections, people have experienced:
– Swelling
– Redness
– Soreness
– Bruising
– Mild headache (uncommon)
– Weakness in a neighbouring muscle, leading to a temporarily droopy brow or eyelid (rare)
– Signs and symptoms of botulism, including problems breathing, swallowing, or speaking (very rare)
More than 30 years ago, a dermatologist and his wife, an ophthalmologist, began using botulinum toxin therapy to treat signs of aging. Today, medical professionals inject millions of patients each year. Research suggests that in the UK that there is a 10 in 900,000 chance of adverse events in relation to Botox each year. This may be under reported.
The definition of an adverse event is an unintended event that occurs when a medicine is administered correctly.
Registered Clinicians continue to make patient safety their No. 1 priority and continue to make new research breakthroughs in the use of botulinum toxin therapy.
Talk to your practitioner if you’ve had botulinum toxin injections and you’re not happy with the results.
If you have a serious problem, such as difficulty breathing, dial 999 to ask for an ambulance or go straight to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E).
You can also report any side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme website. By reporting side effects, you’re providing valuable information about the safety of the product used.
